The new British Canoeing Paddle Explore Award is a sheltered water award, which can be taken in any craft (e.g. kayak, canoe, SUP etc.).
If you already hold a British Canoeing Paddlepower Passport qualifications or in 2018 you were undertaking a PaddlePower Discover course this is the course for you.
The Paddle Explore course will give paddlers the confidence and skills they need to paddle their chosen craft in a sheltered water environment. This course is designed for adult paddlers, working towards achieving their Paddle Discover Award.
The course comprises eight sessions on Tuesday evenings at the Riverside Centre in Bungay. We appreciate participants arriving close to 6pm because they must be ready to get on the water by 6.30pm.
Unless otherwise agreed with your coach this 8 week course will begin on 30 April and finish on 24 June 2019 (no session during school half term on 28 May).
Candidates should already have achieved a level of skill and experience equal to a British Canoeing Paddlepower Passport Award. Participants must be water confident, and ideally should be able to swim (this is desirable but not essential).
Participants may use their own equipment (boat, paddle, personal safety equipment etc.). Alternatively you can use the club’s boats, paddles, buoyancy aids and helmets. The club does not supply wet or dry suits, boots/shoes, cagoules or other clothing: so you need to come suitably dressed to go on the water in whatever weather conditions prevail.
Fees and Payment
The fee for this 8 week Paddle Explore course is:-
£24 (for students in full time education)
Achieving the Awards
The Paddle Explore Award has been devised so that paddlers develop a sense of ownership for their personal development. It may take more than a single season to attain the necessary level of skills and experience to achieve the Explore Award.
When a paddler feels they have achieved their goals, they need to ask a coach with the requisite qualifications to assess them. If a coach, with the requisite qualifications, has been coaching the paddler, the assessment could have been ongoing throughout the paddler’s training.
Alternatively, a paddler may want to do the course and then spend additional time developing their skills before undertaking a formal assessment. They may also choose to be assessed by a coach who has not been involved in their training.
When the coach/assessor considers the paddler to have achieved their target skills, knowledge and experience, for the Paddle Explore Award, the assessor will register the paddler’s achievment (on-line) with British Canoeing.
The paddler can then claim the award by paying the fee (see below) to British Canoeing who will issue the paddler with the appropriate certificate.
Certification Fees for the Awards
The fees for 2019 are as follows:
The Paddle Explore Award costs £8 (BC members £6).
